Hog Plum Beetles in Mauritius: What You Need to Know

In recent months, the presence of the hog plum beetle, scientifically known as Podontia quatuordecimpunctata, has raised growing concern in Mauritius. This insect primarily affects the hog plum tree (locally known as prunier de Cythère), or Spondias dulcis, a fruit tree commonly found in gardens across the island.

Understanding what this beetle is, how it behaves, and its potential impact is essential for both homeowners and businesses.

Life Cycle of the Hog Plum Beetle

The life cycle of Podontia quatuordecimpunctata (hog plum beetle) lasts approximately 36–48 days, passing through egg, larval (four instars), pupal, and adult stages.

Eggs hatch in 5–7 days, followed by a 14–16 day larval period with a distinctive fecal shield. Pupation occurs in the soil for 15–22 days. Adults are major defoliators of Spondias trees.

Key Developmental Stages

  • Eggs: Laid in clusters of 9 to 53, often in multiple layers on host plant leaves. Incubation lasts around 6 days.
  • Larva (4 Instars): Yellow larvae with black heads, known for covering their bodies with their own excrement (fecal coat) to deter predators. This stage lasts 11–19 days.
  • Pre-pupa and Pupa: The mature larva burrows into the soil and forms a pupal chamber. This stage lasts approximately 15–22 days.
  • Adult: Newly emerged adults have a metallic bronze or reddish-brown colour. They are strong defoliators and can live for 40–50 days.

Origin and Arrival in Mauritius

The hog plum beetle is not native to Mauritius. It originates from South and Southeast Asia, where it is already recognized as a pest of hog plum trees.

According to local press reports and agricultural observations published by L'Express (Mauritius) and Defimedia, the insect was first detected in Mauritius in March 2025, in the region of Moka.
While the exact route of introduction has not been officially confirmed, specialists generally agree that invasive insects of this type are most often introduced through:

  • Imported plants or plant material (eggs or larvae hidden on leaves or stems)

  • International trade and cargo movement

  • This aligns with findings from the Food and Agriculture Organization, which identifies plant trade as a major pathway for the spread of invasive agricultural pests worldwide.

    Identification and Behaviour

    • Adults: Bright orange with distinct black spots
    • Larvae: Dark, slug-like appearance, often feeding in groups on leaves

Both life stages feed on leaves, leading to rapid defoliation and weakening of the plant.
Severe infestations can leave trees almost completely stripped of foliage, weakening the plant and affecting fruit production.

    Why It Spreads Quickly

    • Favourable tropical climate
    • Abundance of host plants (Spondias dulcis)
    • Absence of natural predators

    Impact and Current Situation

At present, the hog plum beetle is considered a plant pest and does not pose a direct threat to human health.

    However, its impact is mainly:

    • Environmental: Damage to vegetation and home gardens
    • Agricultural: Reduction in fruit yield

    What Should the Public Do?

    Monitor your trees

Regularly inspect hog plum trees for clusters of larvae or unusual leaf damage. Early detection helps limit spread.

Remove and dispose of affected leaves

    • Prune infested leaves or branches
    • Dispose in sealed bags (do not compost)

    Avoid transporting plant material

Do not move leaves or plants from affected areas, as this is a key spread factor.

    Use caution with chemicals

Avoid uncontrolled pesticide use, which may harm beneficial insects without solving the issue.
